SCENES IN THE DEAN
A POT POURRI OF WORDS, ILLUSTRATIONS AND SOUND

From banditry to respectability

Friday 15th May 2020

at

Cookham Dean Church

7.30pm

Have you wondered what Cookham Dean was like in Victorian times? A lawless place with no Church or School or any other facilities. Occupied by vagabonds, robbers and thieves. Escaping justice by moving into the next Parish where the constable could not pursue them.

How the area grew in respectability as the Church and School were established. We will hear about the lives of those who lived in the village.

As we move into the 20th century, we appreciate the effects of war and its aftermath. We will learn about our village, mainly from contemporaneous records in the Newspapers, the Parish Magazine and personal memories.

That date marks the 175th anniversary of the dedication of the Church in Cookham Dean.
