Rebuilding of Cookham Library Soon to Start (20 June 2001) |
||||
Many of you will have seen a blue tarpaulin covering the top of the library building in High Road next to Cookham Rise Primary School. This is to keep out the rain. The library is in a bad state of repair and was due to have been replaced over two years ago. However, the Royal Borough, after much consultation with Cookham resident, the Parish Council, Cookham Rise Primary School and Cookham organisations, is planning a completely new facility. It is planned to close the library on Saturday 23rd June. |

The library protected with plastic sheeting to keep out the rain. Soon due for demolition. |

There will be a temporary library opening at 103, Whyteladyes Lane. First day of opening will be Monday 2nd July 2001. The opening times can be seen on the library webpage. Click here. |

The new library should be ready for opening around March 2002. The new facilities will not only have a new library, but also a cyber café, new Parish Offices and a Community Room. The current Parish Office at Elizabeth House closed and moved to the new site. This will be much welcomed by the Parish Council, who, for over 100 years, have never had a 'home' of their own. As the Parishes become more important with one stop shop facilities it is important that these new facilities are available for the residents of Cookham. There will also be a Community room, which will be carpeted, but will have a 'wet' area for those who wish to have such things as painting or art classes. It will not be a large room, but small enough for a comfortable meeting room. It is not intended to be used for discos or a Youth Club, which was a worry of some residents. During the building it is planned to bury the Cookham Time Capsule. So anyone who has not prepared their family history there are only a few weeks left. This should be in the autumn. It is hoped that the building for the whole facility will be completed by December ready for fitting out in January and February. |
