Jeremiah has a smile put back on his face

(20 July 2003 update from 12 July 2003)

With thanks to Timmy Mallett for the photographs

Many people will have been appalled at the vandalism caused to eighty year old Jeremiah the Cobblers shoe repair shop by the level crossing, when someone threw a bread tray through the front window of his shop.  Many Good Samaritans have rallied round to help Jeremiah and anyone who has driven by recently will have seen that the boards have been replaced by a brand new window.

The glass was donated by Curly Carver and the frame was donated and installed by Crispin and Borst in Lower Road, who have taken over the premises of Colin Hatch.  Roger Fortescue of Fine Signs has organised the new sign for Jeremiah. Andrew Postlethwaite of Lower Road and Dave Walker of Broom Hill have been painting, so it is starting to take on a new look. Many Cookham residents have offered contributions, as Jeremiah is a well known landmark in the village and has been repairing shoes there for over forty years. Before that Bill Spicer of High Road tells us his father owned the premises when he first set up and Bill was wondering if the awning with his name on is still there. The next phase is to get the rest of the shop spruced up. As the sign is in red it has been decided to paint the door red too.

Jeremiah is over the moon with the support that he has received from so many people. He cannot believe it and wants to thank everyone.
