The
Cookham Wanderers annual European tour brought a 10 goal feast at this
weekend’s Jubilee tour of Galway on Ireland’s west coast. 12
Members of the weekly 5 a side team who play each Friday night at St
Piran’s School, Gringer Hill took off to Ireland. Playing
a top young team from Cisco Systems at Galway’s premier side Mervue
United FC, The slightly older Wanderers began brightly. But
the Cookham Wandrers soon fell behind to some deft footwork from the Irish
legends. Trailing
4-1 half way through the second half and feeling the heat, the Cookham men
brought on their secret weapon – the tallest man on the team Terry Karydas – on secondment from Queensland Australia and not a
regular football player (his preferred sport is Aussie Rules) to a role as
“crumb forward” (something the aussie rules game employs) and it
worked! A lovely assist to former Fleetwood boy – Alan
Day brought a goal and then the smallest player in the Wanderers side
– Timmy Mallett - scored the
goal of the match and his first ever on tour – a delightful chip over
the flailing arms of Paddy Brady in the Galway goal. Former
Bicester Town striker, Martin
Swanson, completed the comeback with a hattrick and the game ended 5
all and the Cookham Wanderers remain undefeated in Europe for 7 years! “I’m
thrilled to have even gotten on the pitch let alone to have
such an impact” said Terry. “It
was worth travelling half way round the World to help the lads and be part
of an historic result!” “First
goal on tour, and the strike of the match! It can’t get any better!”
said modest Mallett. The
Final whistle brought another cheer with the news that Maidenhead
United have won a reprieve from relegation from Conference South! “If
Maidenhead United need any players. Look no further than the Cookham
Wanderers!” said keeper Andy
Burroughs! Timmy
and Terry celebrated their achievements with a day long return by train
and boat – 3 countries and the sea - in a day! The rest of the team flew
back after a sporting weekend of football, golf, go karting, seafood, and
singing ! Anyone
