Following A Midsummer Night’s Dream for the 2011 Cookham Festival, the People’s Shakespeare this year brings Richard III, Shakespeare’s best known, darkly comic history play, to the Pinder Hall stage. Local actor Richard James has again drawn a cast from among the people of Cookham to scale the heights of the bard of Avon. Some of them you may have seen in their last production, but many have never set foot on stage before, let alone performed Shakespeare.

Richard has always been interested in this play and in the character of the hunch-backed monarch and he will be sharing the central role with Nick King who played Oberon in their last production. “That way”, explains Richard, “I get to have a crack at a part I have always wanted to play, whilst staying true to the spirit of the People’s Shakespeare by letting someone else have a go, too”.

It is, of course, a very topical production following the discovery of bones which may very well belong to the last English king to die in battle. “If this proves to be the case,” says Richard, “we may find a way of incorporating this amazing discovery into our production, too!”

A Feast for the Eye, a Joy for the Senses

The Odney Club welcomes Cookham Festival visitors for a third year to a top class exhibition. The Sculpture Garden, curated by Barn Galleries of Henley on Thames, promises to be a highlight of the 2013 Festival, with plenty of works to interest and inspire.

Nationally known names such as Mike Speller, Helen Sinclair and Jenny Pickford will be showing their latest work. And with more 'domestic' sized pieces available too, like the much-loved dogs by Rosemary Cook and colourful glass by Sarah Hayhoe. Walk around the large scale sculptures placed among the trees, in the wild areas and along the waterside, smaller pieces nestling in herbaceous borders or showing off on the terrace.

Bridget Fraser and Lucy Irvine from Barn Galleries will be on hand to advise, to answer any queries and to help you find the perfect sculpture for your garden.

A proportion of the proceeds from the sale of each work will go towards the Festival and the charities it supports.

The Festival organisers are grateful to Barn Galleries, the John Lewis Partnership and everyone at the Odney Club for hosting the Sculpture Garden. The Odney Sculpture Garden opens on Friday, 3 May – six days prior to the formal start of the Festival and visitors are welcome between 10am and 6pm daily. Entry £2 adults, children free.
