Organ Recital

Organ Recital

15 May 2013

Rhidian Jones gave a near packed St John the Baptist church a highly enjoyable and varied evening on the organ last night. Rhidian, who is a familiar face at St John's, pulled out all the stops to give us a wide range of music and composers from the early 17th century to the 20th. Bach, not surprisingly, featured prominently but charming pieces by early English composers (Byrd and the less well-known Giles Faranaby and William Walond) were also on the menu.

The second half gave us the later works - from Cesar Franck, William Walton and Charles-Marie Widor. Widor's well-known Toocata closed the concert and had us all tapping our feet, imagining the many brides and grooms who have left their marriage services to its energetic music.

David Colthup, who organised the whole event, literally lent a hand as page turner, supporting Rhidian with the stops as he worked his way through some of the more complex pieces. A thoroughly enjoyable and relaxing evening.
