NEW VERSION OF THE COMPUTER TELEPHONE
SCAM:
Hi Jeff,
I’m new to this forum, so I hope you are the correct person to contact.
A friend of mine has just received a rather disturbing call (from India?).
The caller claimed to be from TISCALI Support Group (Tiscali was bought
out by TalkTalk some time ago).
The caller said that my friends PC had been hacked and that someone in
Nigeria, was using his IP address on the Internet and that he would need
to purchase a new IP address, to resolve the problem - at a cost of £399
!!
He
then persuaded my friend to allow him access to his PC, via a piece of
downloaded software. He proceeded to run a short application,
which displayed the PCs current IP address. This was probably to try
to add some credibility to his story.
IP addresses (as far as I am aware), are generated by the PC at each log
on and are different each time. How then can anybody can “STEAL”
your IP.
Only large companies and organisation purchase “Static IPs”, certainly
not the overwhelming number of PC users like us.
My friend, became suspicious and told the caller that he would check with
an IT expert (me!) and would call back; at that point the caller hung up.
The morale is “Never Give Anyone Access
to your PC” after a cold call the phone. Only ever allow it if you
know who they are and you have verified their credentials.
Regards,
Doug
Absolutely Doug - Welcome aboard.
Can I remind all new members and - there are
100 of you a month now – that we are a huge self help group. NHW
is the largest group of ‘volunteers’ in the country. The real
‘Big Society’. If you have a problem, or need assistance /
advice, there is always someone out there, who is willing to help and
assist and volunteer their experience. We use this format, to share
experiences and best practice. If something has happened to you,
this is the way we let others know – and that way protect them.
That is how we obtained the services of Paul
Hay our Volunteer IT Guru and Peter Webster our Volunteer CCTV Guru !
Two areas that seem to give members most issues.
I have had this in from Paul:
Jeff, Doug,
This is just another way of them trying to scare / confuse / bully people
into giving away their money.
They will try to confuse people with technology they don't understand to
make them think they need help.
THERE
IS NO WAY FOR THEM TO KNOW WE HAVE A PROBLEM ON OUR COMPUTERS.
In this particular example, they are saying that our IP address has been
compromised. The IP address is the actual name for our computer when it
connects to the internet. Doug is
quite right that this is a number that gets made up each time we connect.
So what they are saying is meaningless.
They are making this all up !
The advice to people is the same as it is for
anybody calling up about our computer. Just ignore what they say. You can
put the phone down with full confidence that they do not know about your
computer.
Regards,
Paul
Thanks Paul
UNWANTED COLD CALLERS
Hi Jeff
I used to describe my wife as ruthless when dealing with unwanted callers
- either at the door or on the phone. However, I've learned from
her.
I have not invited these people to my home and I have no interest in what
they're selling. When they start their spiel I simply say, "I
do not wish to continue with this conversation as I have no interest in
what you're telling me" and put the phone down. If it's at the
door, as soon as I've found out why they're there, I say, "Sorry, but
I'm not interested. Goodbye."
Why the "Sorry" ? I'm not apologising, but I'm
disappointing them. They haven't been rude to me as such, and so I
think it's worth acknowledging that I'm rejecting the product, not the person
who's selling it.
Neil
Thanks Neil – your wife is right on
message !!!
