Crime: 3 February 2014

Another Courier Fraud last Friday

One of the aggrieved’s last week, did exactly the right thing and took down the index number of the taxi that arrived to collect her credit cards.  She was instructed not to talk to the driver, as he would know nothing, other than the delivery address.

I HOPE WE WOULD ALL DO THAT !

If you think this may be happening to you - APART FROM CALLING US IMMEDIATELY, please make a note of a description of the Taxi, the index, name of driver and taxi company – this information would be really useful, if it all goes pear shaped !!!

Apart from that,

ONLY ONE CRIME (Graffiti - Criminal Damage)

TO REPORT OVER THE WEEKEND.

NO BURGLARY DWELLINGS

AND

NO CARS BROKEN INTO
NEXT
Just a quick warning – on the Rural Crime sheets, (we have had no Rural Crime) heating oil has been stolen elsewhere from isolated locations.  If you live in an isolated location and have an oil tank – I have attached a leaflet re its protection.

31/1  Friday 1.30 p.m.  Ray Mill Road WestCourier Fraud – The aggrieved received a call from a Police Officer in Hammersmith.  He explained there was a current scam, where offenders were trying to remove money from his bank account.  He asked him to take £6,000 from his account.  He would arrange for a taxi to come and take him to his bank.  The taxi arrived and took him to the bank in Market Street and waited for him to come out.  He then took him home and charged him £10.20 for the journey.
The aggrieved then received a second call from the same ‘policeman’, who had now got his full trust.  He asked him to tie up the money ready for collection by a second Taxi driver.  He also asked him to pay the £85 taxi fare, for the package.

At that moment a nurse arrived and refused to let him hand over the package to the taxi driver.  The bogus police officer phoned again and asked to speak to the taxi driver.  The nurse spoke to him, and when she refused, he became verbally abusive.  The nurse believed the voice was British Asian – but no money was handed over.

In this case the elderly aggrieved was very lucky.

MEMBERS’ ADVICE:

BOGUS COURT CASES !

Hello Jeff,

I've had a similar email to that from Chris.  It was headed L McNamara and saying I must attend court in London on 31st January -  which I've binned.

Best wishes,

Chris

Exactly the right thing to do.

SCAM HMRC EMAILS:

Hi Jeff

I have received an e-mail, supposedly from HM Tax office for Tax refund !  The form to complete is not too clever, as it refers to Council Tax & the English, is really poor.

Can the site be traced ?

Phil

These are usually generated abroad, by their millions - emails cost nothing to send !

They are not specifically targeted to you, but computer generated, using software that tries every combination of the alphabet.  If they strike lucky – it is pure flook and the hit rate may be as low as 1 in 100,000.  That though could be enough.  We also have an International Law problem, as you can imagine.

The poor spelling and grammar in all these forms of SPAM emails, is intentional.  We - the clever ones - self select ourselves out and bin them.  Only the most gullible respond - their perfect target group – the ones they want to reach.

SPAM phone calls asking if you have been involved in an accident in the last 2 years:

Hi Jeff

Just to let you know that I have received several phone calls, advising me that either myself or my husband, have been involved in a car accident in the last 2 years and that a claim is still ongoing.

I keep telling them that they have been misinformed.  I then ask where they get this information from, so that I get them stopped.  They respond – ‘your insurance company’.

When I ask, who we are insured with, they get very aggressive and keep repeating - "I have just told you, are you Stupid or what".

I calmly reply -  ‘no you have not’.

They are also saying now that they have received accident information, from the ‘Traffic Police’  !!

The caller are always foreign and call from a withheld number.  I have told them time and again, to go away and not call again, but they keep calling.

I just thought I would forward this, as it is possibly yet another scam to gain personal info from vulnerable people.

The next call I receive I will play along with them to obtain as much info from them as possible.

Gill

There are two possibilities here
1.  They are gathering intelligence from you or,
2.  They are just cold calling to try and pick up business and leads for a recovery firm.

Either way – just hang up.  If you engage in conversation, you will always give away some piece of information – it just isn’t worth it.
