Crime: 7 February 2014

I had a brilliant evening on Wednesday, talking to a Women’s Club in Maidenhead, about fraud generally and the Courier Fraud in particular.

I was accompanied by Paul Westgate, from ‘Homeinstead’, who delivered the presentation I sent out recently to you, about fraud and the vulnerable.  It was a brilliant evening, the presentation with PowerPoint support, is excellent and covers every aspect of the fraud and the effects it can have, sometimes long term, of those who fall victim.  Paul has produced a reminder handout / checklist about fraud generally and how it affects the elderly.  I have attached it as I think it is really useful.  Paul has also included full details for the ‘TPS’ – the Telephone Preference Service – which is FREE.

Paul is willing to come out and talk to groups – his details are on the handout.

We were there, because 2 of their members had been affected by the current Courier Fraud epidemic.  One had known about the Fraud, when they got a call and put down the receiver.  The other, though sharp and by her own admission, not in the least gullible, fell for it hook line and sinker.  She was really fortunate though.  After having cut up her cards as requested and placed them in an envelope, when the courier came to collect them, she let him in and he picked them up from the hallway table.

As a result, the bank refunded the full amount withdrawn from her account.  If she had handed them to the Courier, herself, they would not have done so !!!

She could not believe afterwards, she had been so stupid, but had been panicked into it, by the bogus officer.

She has mentioned it to her friends, but not to her family, as she lives alone and independently.  She does not want her family to worry about her, or suggest it was time she moved into secure accommodation !

PLEASE DO NOT FALL FOR THIS ONE !
