Crime:
12 March 2014
NOTIFICATION
HAS JUST COME IN OF ANOTHER COURIER FRAUD:
It took place yesterday in Ascot.
The aggrieved received a call from DCI Benson in London. As always -
there had been illegal usage, of her bank cards. She was asked to
withdraw the contents of her bank accounts – which she did. DCI
Benson, then arranged a courier to collect the cash.
The first courier – a local taxi
driver arrived, but refused to take the packages. DCI Benson then
arranged another courier. 3 Asian men arrived and took the cash.
These incidents are absolutely
devastating to the victims. I had hoped as we had not had a case
since the 1st March, that everyone was now aware.
Obviously not ! Please continue to spread the message. This
was a large sum of money !
CASH FOR GOLD:
I have had this in from Stephanie:
Hi Jeff
I live in Shepherds Close in Hurley and I had the "cash for
gold" man at my front door. He had a massive wad of cash in his
hand boasting he couldn’t get it in his pocket. I guess this
is some kind of mind game about handing your gold over. He was very
pushy and looking at my hands (wedding ring) my ears and my neck. I
told him I had no gold and to never knock on my door again and he got
'funny' with me by saying he wouldn’t have bought my gold anyway.
Kind regards
Stephanie
I also had this in from the Fisheries
Hi Jeff,
We live in the Fisheries. My daughter was in when the Gold for cash
dealers called. She told them that we
don’t buy and sell at the door.
Regards
Don
Please do not deal with anyone who calls unannounced at your door.
The NHW Motto is in fact a protection.
I DO NOT BUY GOODS AND SERVICES AT THE
DOOR.

MEMBERS’ ADVICE:
A NEW SCAM EMAIL – A PARKING SCAM,
WHICH APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN SENT TO DOZENS OF OUR MEMBERS – THEY ALL SAY CATHERINE
ROAD:
Hi Jeff,
I think we have received instances of every e-mail scam going - most of
them quite a number of times. Today we received a new one
"REMINDER NOTICE DO NOT IGNORE
Your vehicle was recorded parked on our Clients Private Property at
Catherine Road.........................
We are holding photographic evidence on file to support this claim. YOU
CAN FIND COPIES OF PHOTOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE AND FORMS FOR MAKING PAYMENT IN
ATTACHMENT BELOW."..................
Huw
Many thanks Huw, I have not seen this
one before. Fay also received the same message !
Hi jeff
I have had an email which relates to parking fines and purports to be from
justice.gov.uk. It has their logos as header and footer and a zip file
with 'details and photographic evidence' attached. Needless to say I
didn’t open that !
Fay
Exactly right Fay
TONI ALSO RECEIVED IT:
Hi Jeff,
Please see below email. I am guessing this is a scam as it came into my
junk mail. I have no idea where Katherine Road is
nor was I using my car on that day, as we were
flooded in Datchet, hence going nowhere!
You may want to make others aware.
Many thanks,
Toni
IF YOU GET THIS EMAIL - DON’T
OPEN THE ATTACHMENT.
AND PETER GOT IT AS WELL:
Hi Jeff
I know there are millions of spam emails but this one could just be clever
enough to catch people unawares. You may feel it is worthwhile circulating
a warning.
I am sure that the Justice Department do not send out this kind of email,
and anyway there is no way my car can be legitimately connected, to my
email address.
The location is clearly left purposely vague but according to Google maps
there is a Katherine Road in London and in west Bromwich.
As it happens, my car was at home all day on the day the “offence” is
supposed to have happened!
Regards
Peter
GAYNOR HAS UNEARTHED YET ANOTHER NEW SCAM
FOR YOU TO BE AWARE OF:
Hi Jeff,
I was called today around 3 pm by a male with a very thick foreign accent.
He told me that my car had been involved in an accident. I do have
one car in for service at the moment, but I have since spoken to the
garage and my car is safe.
The man on the phone was insistent that the car registered to this
address, had been involved in an accident. What was scary is that he
nearly got my address correct ! The address he gave, was very
similar to, but not identical to mine.
Just wanted you to know that from searching the web, the phone number
shown on my phone (0203 129 1891) has been involved with several scams.
All the best
Gaynor
A SCAM FROM JOSEPHINE – THIS TIME ON A
MOBILE PHONE – NOT EMAIL !!!
Jeff
I received a call on my mobile today from ‘Unknown’.
when I answered, a voice message told me to key in a number and then enter
my details for a refund.
Needless to say, I ended the call at that point, but people need to be
aware of this particular form of scam.
Regards
Josephine
I COULD NOT AGREE MORE. NEVER
HAND ANY PERSONAL DETAILS TO ANYONE YOU DO NOT KNOW AND TRUST.
CERTAINLY NOT SOMEONE ON THE OTHER END OF A PHONE OR EMAIL !!!

SOME FINAL ADVICE:
This has just arrived in my inbox from
Nottingham Police Alert. It appears we are all, right across the
country, singing from the same hymn tune !
Many of us use the internet as part of our daily lives, for banking,
shopping, socialising and entertainment. But do you know how to
protect yourself from potential fraudsters, who send phishing and/or spam
emails ?
Phishing is an
attempt to trick users into revealing personal information or financial
data. Ensure you don’t become a victim by noting some of the common
features of emails used by fraudsters:
• Phishing emails are not usually sent to your own name,
general terms are used such as ‘Dear account holder’
• Emails tend to request immediate action such as
changing your password or providing bank details, otherwise your account
may be closed
• Phishing and spam emails usually contain spelling and
grammar mistakes
• The email address of the sender is usually different to that
of the trusted company’s website address
• Links within the email direct you to an insecure website
that does not feature the padlock icon or a secure web address starting
with https://
• Spam emails tend to be from someone you don’t know.
Although sometimes if someone’s email address has been compromised
emails can be circulated to their address book
• Often spam emails contain special offers or
promotions
• Never click an embedded link
in an email from someone you don’t know or an untrusted source. These
can contain viruses or take you to websites containing inappropriate
material
• Remember, if it sounds too good to be
true, it usually is!
For additional information on scams visit the A-Z of Fraud section on the
Action Fraud website. www.actionfraud.police.uk/a-z_of_fraud
You can also report any suspicious activity to Action Fraud and/or the
company that the email purports to be from.
I have to say – that could have
been written by and is very reminiscent of, items written by our very own
IT Guru - Paul Hay !
