Crime: 21 March 2014
FIRST
THING TO DISCUSS – ANOTHER COURIER FRAUD JOB – THIS TIME IN OLD
WINDSOR – THE FRAUD CONTINUED FOR NEARLY A WEEK AND WOULD NOT HAVE
BEEN DETECTED UNTIL AFTERWARDS, BUT FOR THE SPEEDY ACTION OF A BANK
OFFICIAL!
17/3 – 20/3 Monday / Thursday Straight Road, Old Windsor An elderly resident received a call asking him to dial 999 and ask to speak to a ‘DC Bailey’ at Charing Cross Police Station. We have little detail so far, but I imagine the first call was from the ‘Barclaycard Fraud’ unit to say there had been illegal usage of his bank cards. He put down the phone and immediately dialled 999. ‘DC Bailey’ asked him to withdraw £13,700 from his bank, to assist the police. The aggrieved believed what he was being told and the next day, went to his bank and withdrew £5,000. He also went to a Post Office in Slough and withdrew 1,370 Euros. When he had the cash, he returned home and phoned DC Bailey, on a pre-arranged telephone number, he had been given (usually, an untraceable ‘pay as you go’ mobile). He was told to place the cash in an envelope and wait for the Courier. Within 5 minutes the Courier arrived and took the package. He is described as black, 20 – 25 years old, 5’10’, slim with short afro Caribbean hair. Whilst he was at his bank, the Aggrieved filled in some paperwork, for a loan application for another £25,000. It was the Barclays Bank Fraud department, who picked up on the withdrawals and potential loan, as unusual expenditure, froze his accounts and telephoned the police. When the police attended on Thursday the 20th March and spoke to the Aggrieved, he still believed DC Bailey’s story and was expecting another call re the next drop off. There are still vulnerable people we cannot get to. The local NHS commissioners are now circulating details of the Fraud to all their hospital / GP outlets, but we still need to do more, to protect the elderly and vulnerable in our communities. Those, the other agencies cannot reach, so carers, district nurses, physios, chiropodists, transport, day centres, friendship groups, churches, residents associations, the Lions, Alzheimer’s and other disability groups, Smile, the chair based exercise providers, swimming groups, tai Chi, Yoga classes. Make sure everyone you meet, or know, over 50 is aware of this Fraud.
The
thieves would have left this elderly resident, not only penniless,
taking every penny he has, but also put him into sever debt !
