BLOOD TEST SCAM EMAILS:
Hi Jeff
Just to say I have had two Blood Test Result emails today (bad English and spelling) so they are still going round.

Liz

Many thanks Liz.
Another 300 people have signed up to receive Alert messages so far this month !  If you are one of them – Welcome aboard.  As a result, I will be repeating some often, very familiar advice for the rest of us - the 12,000 others, as we need to protect all our new members.
For our new members, the email from NICE telling you that the results of a recent blood test have shown evidence of cancerous cells – please download the results from the attachment and show them to your GP – is a SCAM !  if you open the attachment, it encrypts your hard drive and you have to pay a ransom for the key to remove it - or - it infects your computer with a virus !  DO NOT OPEN ANY ATTACHMENTS in emails you are not sure of.

MEMBERS’ ADVICE:
The Windows Scam, along with so many others, has apparently hit the streets !  We had the case last week, where someone knocked on the door to say that the internet connection was interfering with other people’s lines.  The owner let them in and they loaded the crypto virus on all the computers in the house.  The man then left.  The owner only found out when he tried to turn on his computer.  The ransom - £600 !
This may be a new variation !

Hi Jeff,
I had a cold call this evening, from a man with an official looking ID, saying he was from a new broadband provider.  He could save me money on my internet.

I sent him away saying I was happy with my provider, but was a little suspicious.  The name was something like "New Conn" which is quite possibly what it was!

I can't find the name online, so thought you might like to know in case it was a new fraud angle.

Regards

Paul.

Many thanks Paul, can everyone please remember:

NO-ONE COMES INTO YOUR HOME UNLESS YOU KNOW THEM OR THAY HAVE MADE AN APPOINTMENT.  IF SOMEONE NEEDS TO COME IN TO READ A METER, MADE SURE YOU HAVE SET A PASSWORD FOR YOURSELF, WITH YOUR SEVICE PROVIDER.

It is though continuing online:-

Hello Jeff,

Just a heads up, to let you know the windows scam is back.

A Harry Mitzel phoned me, to tell me that I had downloaded a virus, my computer anti virus software could not tackle.

He wanted me to follow his commands, to fix the problem.

I declined of course, but played along with him. He gave me his address as follows; 41 King Street, Luton before he hung up!  These look like generic office address to me on Google maps but it may be of some help to TVP ?  The call was on Saturday morning at around 11am.

Caller had very heavy foreign accent from Indian sub continent.

Kind regards
Paul

Thanks Paul.
YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHO ANYONE IS ON THE OTHER END OF A PHONE LINE.  THEY CANNOT SEE WHAT YOU HAVE ON YOUR COMPUTER – JUST PUT THE PHONE DOWN AS SOON AS THEY BEGIN !

PREMIUM RATE SCAM EMAILS:
Loads of scam emails do not come from fraudsters / scammers – but from eachother !

Hi Jeff
I have had the email below passed to me, not sure if you have ever seen this or if you have heard of anyone in this area getting a message like this.
Thank you and I must say that your warnings are a real help for all of my elderly residents.
Lynda

The email purports to come from the police warning about returning calls which are being charged at thousands of pounds per minute.  There is of course no such thing.  Premium rate lines charge £1.50 per minute.  This is a form of cyber terrorismbut we do it to each other.  It keeps everyone in a heightened state of anxiety and fear.  These emails circulate for ever, ROUND AND ROUND THE GLOBE EVERY 18 MONTHS OR SO.  The minute you see – ‘and circulate this to everyone you know’ - whoever it appears to come from, this one had Manchester Police  BIN IT IMMEDIATELY AND DO NOT SEND IT ON.
