MEMBERS’ ADVICE:

BIKE THEFT:
Hello Jeffrey,

A story for you that happened to us last week - might be helpful to other people.
My partner leaves his bike at the railway station most workdays, using one of the insurance company recommended locks.
When he got back in the evening, the lock had been damaged, to the extent that he couldn’t get the bike out, to ride home.
He reported it to the British Transport Police and warned the station workers that we were going to try and break the lock open. We failed completely.  While we were trying, another cyclist said he’d had a similar problem and had had to leave the bike there overnight before he could get help.  The bike got stolen overnight.
So, as the part of the lock holding the bike to the bike rack was the cable could be cut with big bolt cutters, we went home and got another D-lock and locked the bike frame to the rack as well as an extra precaution.
Luckily for us, the bike was there the next day and with special thanks to Travis Perkins, who helped us, we got the bike back.
The main point of this is, sometimes the lock is damaged, to make you leave your bike overnight.  This makes it really vulnerable and you have to be able to prove the bike is yours, before anyone will help you free it.
We’d registered the bike on BikeRegister and without that, we would have been really stuck.

An odd thing, you think about how to prevent your bike being stolen but not how you’d get it back, if the lock is jammed!

Kind regards,

Sue

Many thanks Sue and for the plug to REGISTER YOUR BIKE with either Bike Register or Immobilise.com

SCAM BILLING EMAILS FROM BT:

Hi Jeff,

I received an e-mail supposedly from BT's billing department, stating that they were unable to process my last payment.  This was either because there was a change in my personal information, or submitting incorrect payment information, during the bill payment process.

This was addressed to "Dear Account Holder".  Surely they should know my name ?

I pay by direct debit and these payments appear on my bank statement, as having been paid; so there has never  been a delay in payment.  However they are using the authentic e-mail address of BT's billing department so the public should be very vigilant on this one.  I forwarded the e-mail to BT fraud address!

You might like to pass this one on.

Joan

Exactly - if they don't know who you are, yet they are telling you there is an account problem, then obviously they are not who they say, they are !  Just run your mouse over the link.  As you can see above, I have replaced the ‘link’ to your local Neighbourhood Team, with an instruction to ‘Click Here’.  I could put anything I like there – ‘BT Billing Dept’ for example.  All you do is right click on the link and ‘edit the link’.  This is supposed to help when the link is really long.  If you run your mouse over it, you will see the real link hidden underneath !
