The overwhelming response was – leave them as they are ! Many thanks. Two points did emerge:
The one message to take away, is that my messages are not volumes of ‘War and Peace’ (though they sometimes feel like it), literary masterpieces, to keep and treasure. They are for you to skim through, be aware of, to share and discard. The attachments, such as Mrs. Chalmers top tips and fliers, should be saved somewhere in your computer, in case you need them at a later date. I am grateful for the feedback. A new scam email ? Jeff, A new scam email ? I was sent an e-birthday card. Could I please click on a link to access it. I have received e-cards in the past and as my birthday is about now this didn’t look particularly suspicious until I checked the e-mail address of the sender which happened to be just a string of odd letters @ gmail. Who knows, better safe than sorry. David NEXT – charity Collectors Hi Jeff Yet another cold caller. This time, asking for a monthly donation - a standing order - for the Air Ambulance Service, in exchange for a lottery type draw monthly. The conversation went something like this: Me: ‘Hello can I help you’ Cold caller: ‘I'm fundraising for the Air Ambulance’ Me: ‘Can you leave me the information’ CC: ‘No the charity can't afford to leave forms’ Me: ‘Well I don't give my bank details at the door as directed by the local police force’ CC: ‘I've had plenty of police fill the form at the door’ Me: ‘In that case, you may be interested in visiting the actual police station - (points to station at the end of road) - there maybe benefactors there’. CC: (huffing on leaving) Susan It is a really difficult one. If a Charity cannot afford to print enough forms to leave with you, they should be able to point you in the direction of a website, where you can sign up !! CALLS FROM A BANK ASKING SECURITY QUESTIONS, BEFORE THEY WILL TELL YOU WHAT IT IS ABOUT: Jeff Advice about banks ringing and asking for your security details. Hi Jeff, I work in IT and I am therefore very security conscious. When I received an unexpected call from my bank, asking to “Take me though security” (mother’s maiden name, date of birth etc.), I asked the person to repeat their name and number and said I would call them back. The person gave me their name but no number. They said that they would call me back at a more convenient time – at which point, I put down the phone. I then called the security phone number on the back of my bank card (the one which says “Lost cards”) and reported the incident to the bank security team. Bank security got back to me later in the day, to tell me it was a ‘legitimate call’, from their services department (i.e. trying to sell me insurance, mortgage, etc). I then asked that in future, I do not get such ‘service calls’. My point is, if anyone receives a ‘cold call’ from their bank (or any unexpected call asking for personal info), treat it as a ‘phishing call’. Put the phone down and report it. if it is a security issue, the bank will have the details on your record. Best Regards Dominic Very sensible advice. If you phone them and go through the security performance – at least you know, you are giving the answers to your bank, not someone pretending to be your bank to obtain those answers from you. Generally when this has happened to me – if it is a security issue, it is recorded on your file, anyone from that team can access your file and has the necessary detail to discuss it with you. If it is just a sales pitch, the security team will not have the detail – as it was not a security issue !!!
