30/5 Friday 2.40 p.m. Gardner Road. The
police received a call from a bank to say that an elderly client was
inside asking to withdraw money from their account. They had been
accompanied by 2 men who were waiting outside. They suspected bogus
builders. The police attended immediately. Apparently a white
man had knocked at their door, saying he was ‘from the Council’
He had carried out work on her roof and now need to be paid £800 for the
work now, the Council would refund this amount in three days. The
aggrieved went upstairs to get some cash aand handed him £180, saying
that was all she had, but she could get more from the bank. He and
another man had then driven the aggrieved to the bank in a light coloured
car. Once inside the bank, she had asked to withdraw £900 and the
staff became suspicious and called the police. During House to House
enquiries a neighbour did remember seeing a man, in his thirties, wearing
denim jeans and a baseball cap carrying a clipboard. Our
grateful thanks to that observant and caring member of staff.

MEMBERS’ ADVICE:
CHARITY COLLECTORS:
Hi Jeff
I subscribe to TV Alert & have read in previous reports about doorstep
charity collectors pressurizing one to sign up at the door.
A few minutes ago we were visited by two guys representing the Anthony
Nolan Trust. Both wore ID badges & one spoke about the charity's work
for about 2-3 minutes without drawing breath. When he finally
finished, I said something like 'I expect you want me to sign up &
give my credit card details' He said 'not your credit card
details, your debit card'.
I then asked for paperwork from them, so I could think about it. He was
reluctant to give it to me & said I could check it up on the charity's
website, but donating on-line meant the charity only received 75% of my
donation. By signing up at the door they received 100%. I said
I don't sign over my details at the door & sent them on their way.
