This is something else you can help with – and the deadline is again tight - the 27th July ! The Suzy Lamplugh Trust is organising ‘Personal Safety Awards’ for 2014. There are several categories including A Safer Workplace, a Safer Community, An Inspiring Individual, Young Person Safety Award, Best Safety Campaign, etc. etc. – there are lots of categories and and I am sure everyone will find someone or something to nominate – Let’s keep RBWM on everyone’s map and agenda. NEXT A DATE FOR YOUR DIARY: Cllr David Hilton has also asked me to give another reminder about the ‘Retirement Fair’ at Ascot racecourse on Wednesday 20th August. It must be one of the largest events of its kind now. It is aimed at anyone over the age of 50 ! It really is a good day out with entertainment, food and stands with information from every service provider in the area who has any connection with issues for the over 50s ! I have had a request in from Sheila Holmes who chairs OPAF – the Older Persons Advisory Forum to send out her latest Newsletter. OPAF do an enormous amount for ‘the Elderly’ – defined by the Home Office as anyone over 50 !!! It is attached for you. She is holding a ‘Have Your say Meeting ‘ in Hurley High Street tonight at the Rising Sun Pub between 5 p.m. / 7 p.m.. She will be joined by Robin Skinner your RBWM Community Warden. You will be able to chat to them about any issues you may have, but they will also have all the property marking kit with them, to mark not only bikes, but also small property items. As you may have seen, we have had loads of sheds / garages broken into right across the area and things like mowers, leaf blowers and hedge trimmers, have been targeted and stolen. If you can get them into your car, bring them along and get them property marked. I have attached the leaflet produced by Mrs. Chalmers our Crime Reduction Advisor about shed / garage protection. The battery infra red shed alarms, are worth the £12 they cost and if you have expensive bikes / ladders / tools then the alarmed padlocks are also brilliant – 2 levels of security are always better than none at all ! Help us to help you by protecting your property by alarming sheds and property marking, anything likely to be nicked. 3/7 – 4/7 Thursday 9 p.m. / Friday 5 a.m. Sleekstone Cottages, Grange Road, Cookham. MEMBERS’ COMMENTS: ANOTHER NEAT SOLUTION TO THE WINDOWS SCAM CALLS:- Hi Jeff I had an interesting call from the Microsoft scammers today. After the initial introduction I asked him to explain what he was calling about. When he stopped to take a breath, I said loudly and forcibly "B*******". He was obviously taken aback, so I then said "Do you know what that means" ? The response was "No". So I replied "That is a lot of nonsense and you do not know what you are talking about". Much to my surprise, the call was immediately terminated ! Peter PHONE SCAM CALLS – ALL VERY IRRITATING: Hi Jeff, Thank you for the reminder re scams. I have a Vodaphone mobile phone and am fed up with texts coming through telling me I have money sitting there, as payment for an accident, I never had. I was actually was overseas at the time anyway. Another, says I have pension payments to be claimed. I complained to Vodaphone, who have asked me to send the message / phone number, to a number given to me by them. They then say they are dealing with the number of the sender, to prevent other scam messages getting through. Having done this a few times for the same message, I feel maybe the system that Vodaphone is offering, isn't quite as good as it should be. Is there anything I can do to stop this scam ? Regards Iris The only service I know about is of course the TPS – the Telephone Preference Service, but from recollection, it only applies to landlines. Does anyone out there know of anything Iris and the many others of you out there can do ? EMAIL SCAMS GENERALLY: Dear Jeff I have had quite a number of scam emails with the subject Amazon Order, with a zip file attached, with which people may be fooled. It starts
It is aimed at those that cannot see the glaring mistakes. Those who are not too bright – those who may be gullible - the most responsive, likely victims - for the least amount of work.
