Crime: 8 August 2014
NOT A BAD
END TO THE WEEK
NO
BURGLARIES ACROSS THE ENTIRE RBWM IN THE LAST 48 HOURS
A TIMELY REMINDER: Hi Jeff, I have just received a call from an 'alarm company' - number withheld 'in the area', offering free advice or even a free alarm. I have an alarm and was asked, if it was one of those that makes a loud noise ? I ended the call immediately, but it is worrying, to think of the amount of information that could be built up by these people, on local addresses. It may be worth reminding people, never to talk to these people, nor give them any personal information, which would include, whether or not you have an alarm !!! Very useful information if you are a criminal ! Kind regards Jackie ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. Just put the phone down. Re the ‘drones’ with cameras I mentioned earlier this week, I have had this in from Simon – This is a brilliant facility – there is always someone out there that ‘knows’ ! I understand it is called 'love or romance' scam. I didn't fall for it, but am concerned that there may be some vulnerable ladies out there that would... I recently joined a popular dating website and was befriended by someone claiming to be called Adam. He looked gorgeous in his photo and description of himself. We exchanged emails for a couple of weeks, so as to 'get to know each other' and establish what we were looking for, in a romantic partner, interests, values, character etc.. We did this via our personal email addresses which the dating website, suggests you do not do until you've met the person. Within a week, ‘Adam’ was suggesting that we were destined to be soul mates and that we would meet in a week's time, when he returned to the UK for good, from the project he was working on in Dubai. I have to confess, I was quite excited about the 'relationship', as he appeared to be my ideal man. He was very clever and knew exactly what to say, to get into a women's mind, and although I couldn't quite believe it was all real, I thought that I would soon be able to sort out who he actually was, when I met him face to face. As the date of his return/our meeting approached, he began to evade my questions about when exactly, he was coming home. Last Thursday evening I did a live yahoo messenger chat with him. He complained about some issues he was having - a worker had been supposedly killed on his construction site - as well as having financial issues with the local government there and being paid for his contract. Eventually, I asked him....... if I could do anything to help ? He then 'reluctantly', sent me an email outlining how the bank wouldn't give him access to his $25million, without paying an access fee/tax of $20k. He only had $5k, could I send him $15k......... I did not send him the money ! I am a sensible, intelligent women, who definitely fell for his charm. I want to alert other ladies & gents that all is not what it seems in the online world. I reported him to dating website, they said they would investigate, but couldn't tell me the outcome. Thank you! H Thank you H. Very brave of you to share that with us – but if it protects someone else, or prevents them parting with huge siumes of money – we are all grateful ANYONE ELSE HAD THIS PROBLEM: Hi Jeff, I have just received my latest EE bill and was horrified, to find, I had about £14 extra charges for calls, I was not aware of making. I had messages from 60699, ‘Magic Mob’ to win iphones, ipads and vouchers. The message said to text MAGIC to 60699. Needless to say, I ignored these on 3 occasions, only to find I had been charged £1.50. When I called the number, I was told I had signed up for this company for chance to win. All I can say is if I don’t think I did. If I get these I ignore or delete them, so am most distressed at this. I wonder if anyone else has been caught by this scam ? Marie OVER TO YOU ? MEMBERS’ COMMENTS: Something always to be aware of: Hi Jeff I was silly enough to purchase some face cream (anti ageing) that was advertised, alongside my email account. The company indicated the sample price was around £5 and £2.50 respectively. The small print on the order ran to many, many pages. The above figures or thereabout were duly taken from my bank account. Then much to my shock and horror an additional £95 and a further £85. I rang the fraud section of my bank, who indicatedd a large number of people had been hit by the same company. The bank put a stop on any future transactions to them. Two weeks later a further 2 items arrived in the post - and a further 2 payments of £95 and £85 taken from my bank account. I rang the company and discovered they intended to send the 2 packages every month at £180 per hit ! They eventually indicated I could cancel the order - but , they would be charging me £20 per item, restocking charge. I am now extremely wary of over 15 pages of small print ! Linda Can I remind everyone that this is extremely common. Companies suck you in, with free, or very reduced priced samples. To get them – you have to tick a box to say that you have read the Terms and Conditions – often as Linda says, pages and pages of them. These Terms and Conditions, are a contract and by clicking that box, you accept them. Sharp practice is every where, always just this side of the law. Before purchasing any ‘offer’ online, simply Google it, to see how other customers got on and whether ether is any other adverse comments about the company. Once you tick that box, you are bound. SOME KIND WORDS FROM WENDY: Hi Jeff, I was very interested to read about the email from Sue. We too received that message and dutifully binned it. My husband reckoned the clue was in the name. Today we received a similar one and binned that too. I cannot remember the exact name but it was double barrelled ending in Powell. Thanks for your information it is always useful. I was particularly interested to hear that your colleagues around the world also do a great service. Wendy Thanks Wendy, the ‘Members’ Comments’ part of the message, is not me – it is exclusively from all of you out there, trying to help and protect, each other. The police can pass out crime information and crime does happen - I am pleased to say, to fewer and fewer people every day. We are all continually bombarded, day in and day out, with scams and potential frauds. This affects everyone. I am really grateful, to all those who send me advice for our fellow members. That is what we are all about and why we do what we do. PAYPAL SCAM EMAILS: I have received loads of emails from you saying you have received scam emails from ‘Paypal’. By pure coincidence Ann, one of our most conscientious NHW members, sent this to me at the same time: Hi Jeff I am aware many people have been receiving emails purporting to be from PayPal saying that their account has been temporarily limited - please click on the link, to access their personal page. For any doubtful messages from Paypal, recipients should forward them to spoof@paypal.co.uk They will check them out - and - are very grateful, to you for telling them. Ann Many thanks Ann. |
