NO BURGLARIES OVER THE LAST 48 HOURS !

Last day in the office for 2 weeks – off for a badly needed rest.  Not trekking through jungles with the heat, flies, mosquitoes, strange smells and even stranger food, climbing Volcanoes, climbing down into ravines and into bat caves – but to visit Mickey !

Robin has had his computer locked by a Crypto Virus.  I asked Paul Hay our Volunteer IT Guru to look into this to see if there was a way to remove the virus without paying the ransom.

Hi Jeff,

Last month, there was a breakthrough, where they found a way to decrypt the files for many victims.

Here is a link to the story on the BBC news site
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-28661463
It points to a website, which asks you to send an encrypted file and they can then send the unlock mechanism, free of charge.

Hopefully this may help anyone get the files back. This was the main threat doing the rounds. I am unaware of an updated threat along the same lines - however, that is not to say that one isn't around.

I would urge you not to pay the ransom, as there is no guarantee that you will actually get the key.  It just means you have lost more money.

Here is a good article explaining the problem, but also has a great video from Sophos, showing the problem in detail.

I Hope this helps.

Regards,
Paul

Unfortunately – I had this back from Robin:

> Hello guys,

Yes, this is a handy site if you have CrytoLocker. But in this case, the data has been encrypted by CrytoWall - a later variation of the original CryptoLocker. Files encrypted by CryptoWall are not decrypted by this site, unfortunately.

Regards,

Robin

Then back from Paul:
Hi Robin
That's a pity. They got lucky with Cryptlocker, so were able to use the unlock keys. Not so with Crytowall.

Here is a good article about Crytowall, which offers some potential ways of restoring depending on how files were backed up http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/cryptowall-ransomware-information

Regards,
Paul

Many thanks Paul – JUST A REMINDER THEN:
  1.  BACK UP YOUR FILES
  2. DO NOT OPEN ATTACHMENTS IN ANY EMAIL, UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT THEY ARE !!!.

An update of the Phone delivery scam frauds. No more reported to us in the last 48 hours

I have been upstairs to talk to the PEC Supervisors.  It is a value judgment whether or not you call the ‘mistaken phone delivery’ as soon as they arrive, on the 999 or 101 number.  Usually you get the phone call from the Fraudster, within 10 – 15 minutes, which does not give us much time to attend and intercept the driver.  The PEC are now writing a protocol for all PEC operators to access, in all 4 PECs, so that you can use either the 9s or the 101 number, it will be classified as ‘an immediate’ attendance job.  If you are the victim of one of these scams and get the follow up cal to arrange collection, please say the next 10 / 15 minutes is not convenient, but they can call s- say – in one hour or at a specified time – giving us time to get there.
In the Wraysbury job I referred to in, the aggrieved took down the index number of the car which came to collect the phones.  It came back to an innocent Courier company in Kent.  Which we are continuing to follow up.

MEMBERS’ COMMENTS:

First a message from Norah.  She saw a scam email being advertised on facebook.  It was from HM Revenue & Customs – Dear Applicant.........you are due a tax refund.......Please click on ‘sign in’ to accept your incoming funds !!!!

We all immediately recognise this as a scam, even though it is all logoed up correctly and looks genuine.  How though, do we get to those residents of RBWM who are not on the Alert system to get this help, advice and assistance ???

I would be grateful for any suggestions – we must get these messages to and protect more people.  We would like every resident in the Borough to get them.  I have the capacity to put everyone onto my database – how do we do it ???  Homework while I am away.
