1.1 Purpose of the Working Group

The purpose of the Working Group was to assist the Steering Committee in producing the Cookham Village Plan and completing a Rural Villages Health-Check by: researching its designated subject area; consulting with the public and relevant organisations; and preparing a report and action plan.

1.2 Environment and Land

This Group looked at the special nature of the Village, its preservation and promotion of its wildlife, farms, commons, woods, verges and public open spaces. It considered the Green Belt and Conservation Areas. The subject area interfaced with those of the other Working Groups (Housing and Development; People and Places; Business & the Economy; and Transport & Traffic). The Working Group tried to avoid duplication of work by agreeing boundaries and cooperating with other Working Groups and with the Steering Committee.

1.3 Methodology

The detailed methodology for the study was left to the Working Group to agree amongst its members. However, the Steering Committee coordinated the activities of all the Working Groups in the following areas.

1.3.1 Questionnaire

Production of any questions required to gather information from a village-wide survey to be organised by the Steering Committee.

1.3.2 Consultations

The Working Group must identify and consult with all relevant interested parties. Proposed consultations must be agreed with the Steering Committee, so that approaches to each party by different Working Groups can be coordinated.

1.3.3 Research

As well as the questionnaire and other consultation, the Working Group should undertake additional research where necessary to obtain material for use in its report. Sources and the copyright status of any research material must be identified and cited in the report.

1.3.4 Meetings

The Working Group provided a verbal and written progress report at each meeting of the Steering Committee.

1.4 Objectives

The Working Group was required to address the following issues:

1. Consider the issues listed in the Designated Subject Area above

2 Protecting the Environment

In conjunction with other working Groups, review the Green belt and Conservation Areas to identify how they may be promoted in the best interests of the Village

3. Town Planning

Review the environment in Cookham, where and in what form future development should be permitted or prohibited, and how well the planning system works to meet the interests of the Village. This review to be carried out in close cooperation with other Groups.

4. Bio-diversity

Conduct a survey of the wildlife and flora and fauna in the Village
