Levels of Crime
Official figures show that levels of crime are comparable in The Cookhams to the other surrounding areas, with the stark exception of Theft from Vehicles, which is twice the rate of the surrounding areas, including the whole of the RBWM.
Lighting levels are generally poor, but for heritage and preservation reasons, there is a reluctance to increase lighting levels. As an alternative, signage has been installed, but this has a limited shelf life and must constantly be updated and re-installed.
Policing Arrangements
Cookham shares its policing resources with Hurley and Bisham. A new Police Office has just opened in Odney Lane thanks to facilities afforded by John Lewis Partnership.
Ambulance Service
These come from Maidenhead, and response times are adequate given the location and distances involved.
Fire Service
Cookham does have its own Fire Station, but this consists of one appliance and is staffed by volunteers. For urgent call outs, such as all property fires, the call is handled by Maidenhead. Response times are adequate given the location and distances involved.
Action Plan
Car crime must be reduced through the sympathetic use of lighting, CCTV and signage and through the establishment of purpose-built car parking facilities. The population of The Cookhams need to get the balance between allowing lighting levels to be increased, and reducing car crime.
Support the Police and Community Support activities, and maintain the policing base as close to the centre of The Cookhams as possible, e.g. in the vicinity of the railway station.
Maintain the local voluntary Fire Service, and, that if it is reduced further or discontinued, then car parking and/or pedestrian access to parking in Marsh Meadow should be considered on the existing Fire Station premises.
