Title: Home Made Bird Feeders - Poisonous to Dogs
Post by: Cookham Webmaster on June 27, 2019, 02:49:05 PM
from a resident
Someone has hung up sultanas and raisins etc on a thread and hung so low and not secure enough so is on the floor for dogs to eat.  They can cause renal failure, as highly poisonous to dogs! They are behind the old people’s home where boats are moored.

Would have been a good idea to tell the people who had put the raisins out for the birds. I assume the walkers were not carrying scissors with them to cut the threads down and if they had the owners would have thought it was vandals.

Cut them down?

I did this morning whilst walking my dog because she was nibbling away on dropped raisins.

A shame really because the offering was neatly pieced together on a 12 inch loop with small squares of bread interspersed with
raisins and sultanas (lots of them) hung neatly at eye level off a slight tree on a major path on Bellrope Meadow.

The irony was that it was placed in an area frequented by humans thus causing the birds to keep well away.

Let's hope the creator of the offering reads this and understands that raisins and sultanas are a definite no no for dogs.

If people want to feed birds, get some scrap fat or suet from the butcher. Then wrap it in a ball with a piece of net and hang it high, so even an agile dog can't reach it.
