Title: Courier Scam and Crime Update
Post by: Thames Valley Police on August 28, 2019, 05:13:43 PM
FIRST - We have just had another Courier Fraud case:
27/8  Tuesday 7.50 p.m., Wraysbury.  The elderly aggrieved received a phone call from a man saying he was DC Morris from Hammersmith Police Station.  There was some fraud going on at her bank which they wanted to investigate - would she help them ?  They had her name, address, date of birth etc to ‘prove’ they were genuine.  They asked her to go to her bank and withdraw all her savings.  They would send a courier to collect it to have the notes checked.  She ordered a taxi the next day, went to her bank and withdrew £4,000 and a courier later came to collect it.

If you get a call like this - just put the phone down the minute you hear ‘Hammersmith Police Station !  The scam seems to have been franchised all over the country and fortunately, they all use the same standard script !

I have had some of videos made, which are on YouTube featuring local actors from the Windsor Theatre Guild.  Though they are actors, what they describe actually happened.  My grateful thanks to Sue and Angus, who I think, did a brilliant job, of expressing how terrible this crime can be and how it affects the victims.  Please send the links on to neighbours, friends, families and work colleagues.  We need everyone to know how this scam works, to protect those, who are most vulnerable.

NEXT - a NHW update from John Diack NHW Guru for RBWM - this update relates to the brilliant work done by Andrew James in Littlewick Green

Hi

A brief update from NHW in Windsor & Maidenhead.

We set up another new scheme yesterday - new coordinators in RBWM are coming forward regularly now - thank you for all for the publicity.

Our latest scheme is around Green Lane near Littlewick Green.  If any of your readers are interested they should go to the Postcode Search page on www.Ourwatch.org.uk where they will quickly be able to find the scheme and can join.

Here are the details:-

Scheme Name: Green Lane LG
Area Covered: Green Lane (SL6 3RH) and those houses in immediate area of Bath Road (A4), close to Green Lane

Co-ordinator: Andrew James

Because of the increased interest in NHW in RBWM, we have formed an Association for NHW in the Borough, which will help us to raise funds necessary for our expanding activities on behalf of the communities here.  We are seeking a Treasurer, should anyone feel inclined to step forward.

We also have identified a speaker, who will explain the dangers of leaving unnecessary information online and outlining and offering excellent advice about online security and how members should protect themselves.  If any coordinator is interested,  please contact me for further information.

Hi

Can you please share the below for me in your next broadcast?

We have an exciting new opportunity for over ten 13-17 year olds, to join the Windsor and Maidenhead Police Cadets !  The new term starts on the 4th September, with evenings running every Wednesday, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., at Maidenhead Police Station.

Cadets, will be introduced to what it is like to be a police officer, take part in crime prevention campaigns and receive some of the best confidence building and leadership training, anywhere in the country.  Cadets are provided with their uniform free of charge, will be able to take part in heavily subsided activities and be supervised, by an excellent team of cadet leaders, from across police and civilian life. Most recently, cadets have received First Aid training, taken part in test purchasing operations with the council & TVP and, have participated in community events, all over RBWM.

We are keen to welcome anyone interested in what we can offer, or to find out more, please do get in touch with us via Steve Steniford – our recruitment lead - at wmtvpvpc@outlook.com   .

MEMBERS’ COMMENTS:

FIRST: FROM TESS

I’m letting you know that about 15 minutes ago I had a phone call.  There were several seconds of silence at first, then an electronic female voice told me: ‘This is Ofcom.  Your telephone line will be cut off….

I put the receiver down at once.  Others may be targeted too.

Regards

Tess
