Title: Five out of six Berkshire areas saw a rise in coronavirus cases overnight

A further 13 cases of coronavirus have been recorded in the last 24 hours in Berkshire, according to new official figures released today (September 5).

Five out of six areas saw a rise in cases, bringing the number of positive tests to 3,779.


Slough and Windsor and Maidenhead saw the biggest rises with four new positive tests recorded in each area.

No further deaths have been recorded at hospitals in the county.

A total of 344,164 people are confirmed to have had the virus since the start of the pandemic, an increase of 1,813 since yesterday.

The Government said a further 12 people had died in the UK within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Thursday, making a new total of 41,549.

This is how the figures break down in terms of cases for each area of Berkshire:

Reading : 872 cases (no change) 
Slough : 782 cases ( increase of four)
Wokingham : 652 cases (increase of three)
West Berkshire : 542 cases (increase of one)
Windsor and Maidenhead: 520 cases (increase of four)
Bracknell Forest : 420 cases ( increase of one )

The total number of deaths at Berkshire NHS trusts remains at 574, as detailed below:

Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust: 365
Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust: 190
Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust: 20
Meanwhile, associate professor of infection modelling at the University of Warwick, Dr Mike Tildesley said there are fears universities could act as “amplifiers” for spreading the virus.

He told BBC Breakfast: “What we need to remember is at the moment in the country we’re dealing with a series of really local outbreaks that we’re trying to manage with local control policies.

“But when students come to university, potentially they’re travelling across the country and possibly they may be moving from parts of the country where there’s a lot of infection to parts of the country where there may not be as much infection.

“So there is the possibility that when these students move long distances they could carry infection with them.”
