MORE than 140 new cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in Berkshire in the past 24 hours, according to latest figures.

Public Health England has recorded 144 lab-confirmed cases in the past 24 hours in areas including Reading, Bracknell, Wokingham, West Berkshire, Slough and Windsor and Maidenhead.

These figures, correct as of 6.30pm on Monday, November 16, bring the county's lab-confirmed positive Covid-19 tests total to 11,631 according to Public Health England.

The local breakdown for the past 24 hours as follows:

Reading - 66 cases, 2,235 total

West Berkshire - 0 cases, 1,440 total

Bracknell - 11 cases, 1,246 total

Wokingham - 0 cases, 1,752 total

Slough - 66 cases, 2,934 total

Windsor & Maidenhead - 0 cases, 2,024 total

The latest 7-day rate per 100,000 people locally are as follows:

Reading - 161.9 per 100,000 people

West Berkshire - 106 per 100,000 people

Bracknell - 110.2 per 100,000 people

Wokingham - 96.4

The country is about half way through the second lockdown now, as figures are continuing to rise.

There have now been 1,390,681 cases of Covid-19 across the UK – as of Monday, November 16 at 6.30pm.

The total number of deaths - those with Covid-19 listed on the death certificate - across the UK has now reached 61,648.

The government will be looking at whether to "embed" in a new tier system the additional measures previously available to local areas placed under Tier 3 before England's lockdown, the Communities Secretary has said.

Appearing on BBC Breakfast, Robert Jenrick was asked if there could be a tougher tier than Tier 3 in the new system.

Meanwhile, Matt Hancock hopes Covid-19 testing can be offered to enable people to visit their loved ones in care homes across the country before Christmas

The Health Secretary said there is a "terrible dilemma" between wanting to keep people safe in care homes yet also wanting to allow visiting.

He told the Commons: "Testing can help to resolve that. The pilots are ongoing now in some parts of the country and I very much hope we can get to the position where we can offer testing to enable visiting across the country before Christmas."
