Does anyone have any information about the Caught family who used to live in the Dean? I have found a reference to a Bob Caught in Roger Parkes book which says he was the butcher.

I have been given this information from someone who is knowledgable about Cookham's history.

“I may be wrong, but is the Newman family at Grange farm are related to the Caughts? There was certainly a Bob Caught in Cookham. I believe that they had that farm as well as Highwood, or possibly after it.
 

When I was young, the butchers were Jack Smith (High St), Pearce in Dean Lane (later Peter Gigg, who was his assistant) and Wheeler in Lower Road, at the foot of Halldore Hill. There was a butcher where the present one is near Pinder Hall. I have forgotten his name but it may have been Bob Walker.”
 

Roger Parkes may have got the right name but the book he wrote is pure fiction, based around Cookham surnames and only loosely linked to events. Very good entertainment, which he was good at, but it confuses anyone interested in Cookham history.

“Bob senior was a farmer with a collection of small holdings in the Dean and Terrys Lane. In his youth he was a keen cricket player. There is a record somewhere of a game where the batsman was bowled and caught by Caught.
His son Bob junior was at school with me. The last I heard when he got married, he moved to West Sommerset.
My father's uncle Gray, was a butcher in the Dean and Marlow, that is why my father took up the profession of Journeyman butcher and slaughterman. Jack Smith in the high street was owned by Dudley Sims, who had a shop in Maidenhead and a farm at Dorney Reach. He lived in Maidenhead Court.”
