Title: Crime Update Post by: Thames Valley Police on August 06, 2021, 03:58:26 PM FIRST: WE HAVE HAD A ROMANCE FRAUD REPORTED TO US:
We have received a report a romance scam which has been taking place over many, many years ! It involved a woman – who is not elderly - who lives here and a man who lives in Georgia. The aggrieved has known him since 2010. When they met on a social network website. We have been told he used to travel to Turkey as a seasonal worker and also travelled to Belarus. They formed a romantic relationship and met twice in Turkey between 2012 and 2013. It was then that he started to ask for financial assistance. As the aggrieved had savings, she agreed to help him on condition – he paid her back. Sixteen transfers of cash were made in 2016, followed by more transfers in 2017. Since May 2018, he asked for money on a regular basis. He said he needed the money for legal fees, fines, health emergencies and other serious reasons. So far, between £65,000-£70,000 was transferred between May 2018 and April 2019. The aggrieved has now realised, she has been the victim of a long term scam and is trying to recover some of the money. That is going to be extremely difficult as she willingly sent the money. PLEASE DO NOT LET THIS BE YOU. IF YOU FORM AN ONLINE RELATIONSHIP WITH SOMEONE FROM ABROAD – BLOCK THEM, THE MINUTE THEY ASK FOR MONEY !!! STOP – BREATHE – THINK – BIN EVERYTHING NEXT: KEYLESS CAR THEFT: I have been trying to obtain some CCTV / Video Doorbell footage of how this happens – it is so quick and simple – once they have the electronic devices – which are supplied by organised crime groups. When you watch these videos – you will understand why I say: Keep your keyless fob more than 30 feet from the pavement / front door Keep it is a ‘Faraday Cage’ cage / fridge Purchase a small credit card protector – remove the card sleeves and keep your key inside. There are now Faraday purses and handbags to protect keys YouTube clips showing how it works !!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdb3wdatxYA In this clip, you can see its on a busy road, but the thieves don’t care, but you can see how they use the device – fortunately – they don’t get a signal ! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szsUPQ2FoUY This is the best clip to watch as it shows how persistent they are and what to watch out for – when out and about https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uC1kNjmyjSM You may have locked your car and placed your fob securely somewhere and therefore not been a victim, but if you have a performance car on the drive, check any CCTV / video doorbell footage regularly. – you may have been targeted, but not know it.
