Title: Crime Update Post by: Thames Valley Police on September 20, 2021, 07:30:55 PM FIRST: a possible ‘Romance Fraud’, but definitely not something to become involved with:
A local resident received a friend request from a man abroad and they chatted for several weeks online. He then started to send photos of jewels and cash ! He asked for their details as he wanted to send a package of £500.000 cash through Heathrow and needed an account in the UK for it to be paid into. He maintained the cash was to purchase a house in the area and the budget was a property between £500,000 - £800,000 ! Could they help locate one and any balance would also be sent in the same way. The package of cash was supposed to be arriving in Heathrow on the 18th and the person involved, immediately made contact with the police. Has anyone else received or been involved with anything like this ? If so – we need to know immediately. If this is a Romance Scam, it would be serious money laundering. You may have read cases in the papers over the last 5 years of young people being approached randomly to allow their bank accounts to be used for financial transactions – for which they get to keep some of the cash being laundered. Many students felt this was a simple way to increase their income – until – they get a knock on their door from the police !!!
