MEMBERS’ COMMENTS:

Hello Jeff,

Firstly thank you for all you are doing for the community and for the excellent neighbourhood alert emails which make of interesting and informative reading.
I just wanted to let you know about a scam email that is doing the rounds, and appears to be as a result of someone’s email account being hacked.  My father and I have both received one of these in the last 3 weeks:

An email arrived from people we have been in email contact with. It did appear to be from their email address.  It said (i) “have a problem with my email can you respond to confirm you’ve received this” and (ii)  “I have a favour to ask you, if you don’t mind”.
We replied to say “yes received” and “depends what the favour is” ?
Second email arrived, saying, ‘Can you a purchase a £200 google play gift card for me as I can’t get to a shop, or work out how to do it online.  It is for (i) a sick friend whose parents have died, and (ii) a birthday present for a friend, as I am out of the country and forgot to get them a gift
The email goes on to say “I promise I will reimburse you” and “once you have got the gift card, I will tell you how to get it to me”.
At point 3, we hit the delete button !  I communicated with the person I received the email from and he advised he had a problem with his account and had had to switch to a new address.

Thought you may like to share this information with the community, as some people could be taken in by this, as the email address appears correct, genuine and purports to be someone you know.

Keep up the excellent work

Many thanks

Alison

What this means is their computer has been hacked and this email message has gone to everyone in their personal address list / contact list.  It is the same sort of thing as the – ‘I am crying as I write this from my holiday in X place.  We have been robbed and have no passports cash / debit cards and cannot pay X Y Z.  Please send me some money ……….

Please remain alert !  These are tricky, as you appear to know the person involved and as their contact list has been hacked, it is addressed to you personally !

NEXT – WHY WE SHOULD ALL CHECK OUR BANK STATEMENTS:

Hello Jeffrey
Just want to let you know that my husband's bank account had a debit of £79.99 charged apparently, by a computer software company.

The deduction was totally unauthorised and unexpected.

We believe It to be a Scam.

We've contacted the bank, and they're in the process of completing a form to get a refund; said we need to ring back in a few hours.

And they've cancelled the bank card, and are re-issue a replacement.

We don't know how this came about, as my husband has not applied for any computer support.

Just thought you might like to be informed of this potentially fraudulent action and suggest people keep an eye on their bank accounts.

Thanks for all that you do.

Kind regards, Jacqui

Many thanks Jacqui – advice we should all follow !
