Members of the Winter Hill Golf Club in Grange Lane, Cookham, were told the course will close by this April at the latest, with the intention to sell off the clubhouse and course, including two residential properties.

It is in “advanced talks” with the Maidenhead Golf Club in Shoppenhangers Road, who relinquished the lease of their 132-acre land to the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead council for a reported nearly £16m.

This would enable the major housing development of up to 1,800 homes, a primary, secondary, and nursery school, public open space, and a local centre.

Maidenhead Golf Club members have until the end of 2025 to find and move into a suitable site for the development to begin if the council consents to the planning permissions.

Winter Hill, which is owned and managed by the John Lewis Partnership, said the sale will progress if the 400 Maidenhead Golf Club members agree at the next extraordinary general meeting.
