Warning to travellers on the branch line

GWR are putting revenue protection officers on the branch line. Historically there has always been a fairly relaxed attitude about purchasing tickets on the train but with the installation of ticket machines at Marlow and Cookham, the whole line is now in a penalty fare area and you MUST purchase a ticket before travel. As several unfortunate people found out this afternoon, attempting to reason with revenue protection staff is completely futile. They are incentivised by commission, and not possessing a ticket for travel is what's known as a 'strict liability' offence, meaning that all GWR have to prove is that you didn't have a ticket, you have no defence other than that the ticket machine was faulty. Running for your train is not a valid defence.
You are also recorded on video. Aggressive behaviour is very likely to see GWR escalate the affair and initiate prosecution. Additionally, I have seen them intimidate younger travellers and then had them self-incriminate in front of the camera to previous offences. You MUST ensure that your children are aware of the situation and that they should provide accurate name and address details - this is a legal requirement - but that they should not respond to any other questions about historical travel and must remain polite at all times.
I am sorry to have to be posting this and I do appreciate that fare evasion is a significant issue for the train operating companies, but I'm guessing that with the takeover of TfL for most of the Thames Valley stopping services, GWR will be acting aggressively to protect a diminishing revenue stream and you are going to be the victims.
