We wanted to write to you and let you know about all the things we’re doing to make sure our Food stores are open to serve you and your community at a time when you’re relying on us.

Before we do that, let’s start with a big thank you from all of us in the M&S Food team. Thank you for the kindness and patience you have been showing to all of our colleagues in these exceptional circumstances. We read all the stories and feedback that you leave on social media and via our call centres about our colleagues, products and stores, and it means the world to them – and to us.

You can rely on us for quality fresh food, from fruit and vegetables, to meat, fish and poultry and fresh bread from our in-store bakery. And, we’re excited to tell you that from this weekend, 100% of our strawberries are British, supporting our wonderful British growers.

We’ve been stocking up on even more of our family essentials, including our 200+ Remarksable Value products. In addition, we have daily fresh deliveries of our restaurant-quality prepared meals including Indian, Chinese, Italian and our new Gastropub range.

In our grocery department, we have been improving availability across all the essentials, including tinned food, dried goods, cereals and washing and cleaning products as well as all those M&S family favourites and special treats. Thanks to our hardworking colleagues and suppliers, no matter what time you shop, we aim to always have what you need. There may occasionally be some small gaps but trust we are working relentlessly to be fully stocked for you.

Our food departments remain open in every store, here’s a helpful link so you can check your local stores’ daily opening times.

Our stores are carefully managing the number of people shopping at any one time. We have introduced floor markings to ensure a two-metre space is maintained between customers as well as installing protective perspex screens at checkouts. Our stringent hygiene procedures mean colleagues are washing their hands every 30 minutes as well as thoroughly cleaning trolleys and baskets throughout the day, and cleaning self-checkouts after every customer.

We are also deep-cleaning all stores every evening. To encourage contactless payment, the limit has now been raised to £45. Additionally, all our frontline colleagues are receiving a further additional 15% pay reward in recognition of the work they are doing to support the national effort. Any of our colleagues who are required to follow government advice and self-isolate are also being supported and are receiving full pay.

This week we added to the many things we are doing across the country to support the communities we serve. We extended our popular dedicated shopping hours to include health and social carers. See here for more details.

We also introduced a brand-new initiative to provide an easy in-store payment method to support volunteers shopping on behalf of our most vulnerable, older and self-isolating customers. Our ‘We’re All in this Together’ E-Gift Cards can be purchased online, and work using a barcode which is sent to the email address provided during online checkout. The volunteer shopper then simply scans the barcode on their phone at the self-checkout or reads their E-Gift Card number to the colleague at the till, and the value is deducted from the customer’s E-Gift Card balance. You can purchase these cards here.

In our 46 stores located in hospitals, we have added new product ranges to provide more essential items. This means hospital workers can get all they need for lunch, evening meals and to stock their cupboards with the basics. We are continuing to maintain food surplus redistribution through our Neighbourly scheme. https://www.neighbourly.com/NeighbourlyCommunityFund?extid=em_fnl_200403_f_NC1&ep_mid=8556199&ep_rid=461512612200403.8556199
Over the coming weeks and months we will keep you updated on everything we are doing to support your local community.

This week we launched a series of activities on our social media channels, with something new for families to enjoy every day of the week. Our team of experts will be sharing top tips with everything from inspirational family recipes from chef Chris Baber, including helpful hacks to use up those store cupboard essentials, to family-friendly mini-workouts, and tips on channelling a positive mindset from Faisal Abdalla (aka Mr PMA – Positive Mental Attitude). We have exciting activities linked to our popular Little Garden campaign. Led by campaign ambassador, the Skinny Jean Gardener, we’ll be helping to keep kids busy and green-fingered with a twice-weekly series which includes fun quizzes and challenges that kids and parents can enjoy together.
