Highways England says a stretch of the motorway between junction 6 at Slough and 8/9 at Maidenhead will be closed in both directions.

The motorway will shut at 8pm on Friday, April 24, and reopen again at 6am on Monday, April 27.

Traffic will be diverted along the A308M, A308 and the A355 and there will be fully signed diversions in place.

Highways England says traffic volumes on the M4 have dropped massively as people continue to follow the government's social distancing advice to stop the spread of coronavirus.

Anyone who does still need to travel is advised to allow more time for their journey and consider alternative routes if they can.

Further M4 closures coming in May

Another full closure is planned for the first weekend in May.

This is between junction 5 at Langley and junction 6 at Slough.

The operation is a similar one, with both carriageways closing between 8pm on Friday, May 1, and 6am on Monday, May 4.

The motorway is closing for steel beams to lifted into place for the new Recreation Ground bridge over the carriageway.

M25 link road to M4 closure

The link road from the M25 junction 15 to the M4 junction 4b westbound will also be closed over the weekend.

Drivers from the north from the M25 will be diverted to the M40, using junction 9 with the A34, junction 4 with the A404 or junction 2 with the A355 to rejoin the M4.

Drivers from the south will be diverted via the M3 to rejoin the M4 at junctions west of the closure.

Anyone coming from the west will leave at junction 13 to go to the A34 or follow diversions from junctions 11 at Reading, Berkshire, or 8/9 at Maidenhead.
