A SCAM TO REPORT IN MAIDENHEAD:
At around 12pm on Wednesday (6/5), the victim received a telephone call from a man calling himself ‘David Sterling at her bank.  He explained that the bank had recently ordered a new Card Reader for her, but before it could be delivered, it needed to be activated.  He therefore needed her PIN number.  The aggrieved was at first reluctant to give this over the phone, but was finally persuaded.  She felt this was not necessary and said she wanted to make a complaint about the procedure.  She was passed to a man calling himself ‘William Morris’  He apologised and said he would have the Card Reader sent round to her house, but the courier would have to actually see her bank cards, to prove her identity and she was the account holder.  A man arrived at 2.45 p.m.  He asked for her bank cards, but she refused to hand them over until she saw the Card Reader.  The man handed her a parcel and while she was opening it, he snatched her cards and made off.
She immediately phoned her bank to cancel the cards, but by the time she got through and explained what had happened a very large sum of cash had been withdrawn and transferred to other accounts.
The bank is attempting to recover the money.

If you ever feel a phone call feels like a bank scam, put the phone down and then using another phone, in case the scammer is holding the line open, phone your bank. Then report the incident to Action Fraud. Banks will never ask you for your PIN number over the phone.
