Windsor’s Neighbourhood Plan, which includes objectives to preserve the historic nature of the town and protect green spaces, has been adopted by Full Council.
The plan, which was approved at a referendum in May, aims to manage the development coming forward in the area to better reflect the wishes of residents and to take greater account of what makes it special to the community.
Full Council agreed to formally ‘make’ the plan, meaning it will be part of the development plan for the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead and will be used in decision-making for relevant planning applications in the neighbourhood planning area.
Councillor David Coppinger, cabinet member for planning and environmental services, said: “I’m delighted that voters chose to support a neighbourhood plan for Windsor and that it has now passed the final part of the formal process.
“Neighbourhood plans, introduced under the Government’s Localism Act, give communities a greater say in how local need for development can be met by deciding where new developments should be built and how they will look.
“I commend the people of Windsor for their commitment and enthusiasm in taking advantage of this opportunity.
“A neighbourhood plan provides them with an opportunity to shape future development in their local area, protect what they feel is special and unique, and make improvements to their community.”
The plan sets out a number of objectives, as well as planning policies, to 2034 to guide future development.
These include:
The preservation of the historic nature of the town and its key views by the conservation of heritage and through attractive new development that is sympathetic to the town’s distinctive and historic character.
A green and leafy feel to the town, with a linked network of green and open spaces.
The enhancement of the outer suburbs through attractive new developments.
Good access to shopping, community and leisure facilities, including a new health centre in West Windsor, a range of local pubs and restaurants.
Attractive and flexible new homes in a mix of sizes and types which provide a good level of amenity space and adequate and well-designed parking.
A convenient and well linked network of improved footpaths and cycleways.
Greater leisure opportunities through a new footbridge across the River Thames allowing easier access to the Thames Path and the north side of the river.
Full Council agreed to adopt the plan at a meeting on Tuesday 29 June.
