A free holiday activities and food programme supporting the most disadvantaged and vulnerable families in the borough will continue this summer.
The Royal Borough’s Feed Ur Everyday Lives (FUEL) programme is for children eligible for free school meals and aims to provide additional support to vulnerable youngsters.
This summer it will run from Monday 2 August to Friday 27 August and young people and families will be able to access a regular source of free activity groups and nutritious meals.
The programme is being delivered by Achieving for Children, which manages the council’s children’s services, with funding from the Department for Education. It initially ran for two weeks over the Easter school holidays.
Achieving for Children has teamed up with holiday clubs, family hubs, sports groups and more to deliver the summer programme. It will offer activities for children aged five to 16-years-old for four hours a day, four days a week.
Councillor Stuart Carroll, cabinet member for adult social care, children’s services, health and mental health, said: “Our Easter programme was very successful, providing vital support to families in our borough who need it most, and I’m delighted to see it continuing this summer. The council and Achieving for Children are determined to ensure children have a happy and memorable summer break and thanks to the variety of activities on offer with FUEL, there is something for everyone.
“A critical priority of the council is protecting vulnerable people and ensuring all children have the same opportunities and life chances. This programme is a critical part of our ongoing commitment to supporting some of our most disadvantaged and vulnerable families in the borough.
“The school holiday periods can be times of added financial pressure for families, with increased costs on childcare and food, and we hope FUEL’s offer of nutritious meals and fun and engaging activities will help our hardest-hit families.”
The summer programme will include sensory activities for children with special educational needs, yoga, skipping, dance classes, as well as a range of sports activities.
The programme runs until the end of 2021 and will also take place for one week during the Christmas holidays.
