Severe delays are reported on the M4 motorway around Berkshire and Greater London today - Saturday, April 9 - as the carriageway remains shut in both directions near Heathrow Airport. Smart Motorway works are taking place on the carriageway between Junction 3 and Junction 4B - with the route closed in both directions until Monday morning as thousands take to the roads for the first weekend of the Easter Break.

A diversion route is in place for traffic attempting to use both the eastbound and westbound carriageways. Another route is in place for people trying to get to Heathrow Airport.

A National Highways spokesperson said: "There are delays of up to 1 hour on the M4 westbound carriageway on approach to J3. There is approx. 3 miles of slow moving traffic on the M4 westbound on approach to J3, and 2 miles eastbound on approach to J4B. Both clockwise and anti-clockwise link roads from M25 on to the M4 eastbound are also closed this weekend."
