Maidenhead council votes to demolish Broadway car park

On Thursday, July 27, the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead cabinet met to discuss the future of Broadway Car Park in Maidenhead.

The car park had been closed since New Year's Eve after a piece of the ceiling fell down sparking serious safety concerns.

Since then a report found that the ageing structure had failed and water ingress had eroded the reinforced steel.

The car park dates back to the 1960s and has been found to have now reached the end of its "economic life" with warnings of "significant structural failure".

In the cabinet meeting the visual inspection report of the car park was discussed, along with concerns about the demolition.

It also came to light that Broadway Car Park was due to be demolished under plans for the Nicholsons development.

Now given the go-ahead by the cabinet, Broadway car park could begin to be demolished and cleared as early as this autumn, in a process which is estimated to last a year.

Executive Director of Place Services, Andrew Durrant added that due to the position in the central park of time with close proximity to various different neighbours, the demolition will "come with its challenges".

Traffic management arrangements will be put in place in Maidenhead town centre during the works.

A council spokesperson previously said: "While this might seem a while, this time is needed for such a major project to safely demolish a large multi-storey building in a busy, built-up area."

The council have stated that they will be looking to create a temporary car park once Broadway has been demolished.
