FIRST: Another Windows, Microsoft BT scam - 'your computer is running slowly'.
This was a standard scam call, from ‘The BT Pro Care Team. The aggrieved felt they sounded genuine, so when they asked him to type some code into his computer and press enter - HE DID SO ! They said it was some routines to help monitor the computer speed. A remote Screen appeared and he could see them moving things about from their offices.
They then asked him to insert his debit card details and PIN numbers - WHICH HE DID. They needed his card and bank details to refund him £204 in compensation which was due because his computer was in fact running too slowly.
Later the aggrieved became suspicious about the whole experience and phoned BT, who confirmed it was a scam. He then phoned his bank who confirmed the scam, cancelled and stopped all the cards. It was a relief to hear that no money had been withdrawn from any of the bank accounts he had given them !!!.
He has now changed all his passwords to make sure they cannot access anything in the future.
This is another example that we have not spread the message far and widely enough ! There are still people out there who are unaware of the Microsoft / BT - your computer is running slowly scam - one of our most prevalent, some people getting several calls a week !
Please spread the message - this could have been devastating for this victim !

NEWS UPDATE FROM NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH
The Maidenhead Police Area NHW Association continues to flourish and is making great strides in reactivating and expanding Neighbourhood Watch within the town and its surrounding areas. Many new schemes have been established over the past year and many more are emerging, thanks to a number of new active Coordinators. Residents within these scheme areas can now benefit from the new initiatives being introduced by Neighbourhood Watch and Thames Valley Police.
One such exciting initiative is the introduction of free home security surveys, to be conducted by a local PCSO, who will assess the security of your property for any potential vulnerability, and will make recommendations on what you can do to improve your safety and security. They will also offer very useful security items such as a variety of alarms, handbag bells and cables, fake TVs, etc., all of which are available, at no cost, courtesy of Thames Valley Police, for those who cannot afford to purchase their own. They can further refer you to NHW for the supply and installation of additional security items such as door chains, magnified spy holes, etc., also at no cost to those who can’t afford them.
