Phishing and Crime Update

Some new guidance has been issued, re the reporting of phishing emails:
The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) have launched a new mechanism for members of the public to report phishing emails. The Suspicious Email Reporting Service (SERS) has been co-developed with the City of London Police to help identify and monitor suspicious activity. Once a dubious email has been forwarded, the NCSC’s automated programme will immediately test the validity of the site. Any sites found to be phishing scams will be removed immediately.

Suspected phishing emails should be forwarded to report@phishing.gov.uk
The NCSC will analyse the suspect email and any websites it links to. If malicious activity is discovered, actions can include:
Blocking the address the email came from, so it can no longer send emails
Working with hosting companies to remove links to malicious websites
Using the information to raise awareness of the most commonly reported suspicious emails and methods used
SERS does not replace the need for fraud to be reported. Members of the public should still be encouraged to make a report to Action Fraud if they have fallen victim. The NCSC acts on every message received but does not inform the member of the public of the action taken.
