The wonderful, accredited RBWM Museum in the historic Windsor Guildhall is the (other) jewel in Windsor's crown.
Yet, incredibly, the RBWM is now pressing
for the Museum to close.

The Museum was reopened in the Guildhall in 2011 by her Majesty the Queen and has since enjoyed huge success and popularity with both locals and visitors from near and far. It would seem unthinkable to most that Windsor, one of the most famous historic towns in the world and a tourists’ paradise, would not have a museum.

Much complimented by visitors, the Museum displays part of a collection of over 13,000 local historical and archaeological artefacts, illustrating the heritage and rich culture of Windsor and the other parishes of East Berkshire. There are both permanent and temporary exhibitions, plus a newly growing digital collection where particularly interesting objects are explained online by curatorial staff. Popular educational and school holiday sessions for children are regularly held by staff and volunteers.

The museum has promoted and improved access to heritage and the arts in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead and staff have worked on some great, themed projects over the years, many in connection with historic anniversaries. It is well-supported by the Friends of Windsor & Royal Borough Museum and a team of enthusiastic volunteers.

There will always be exciting new exhibitions because objects in each new display are selected from the large Museum Collection store, housed elsewhere within the Borough. There are also small displays of the museum's objects at Windsor library, Dedworth library, Maidenhead library, Maidenhead Town Hall and Boyn Grove and Cox Green libraries.

The Museum Collection began in 1951, when local man Maitland Underhill decided to create an exhibition about the history of Windsor as part of the celebrations for the National Festival of Britain. The exhibition proved so popular, it remained on display in the Guildhall until 1982. The Museum Collection also contains a number of important items from Maidenhead's former 18th century town hall, some of them acquired from an earlier museum in the town, as well as numerous items of local interest donated over the years.
