FIRST:  22/4  Thursday 8.10 a.m. Osney Road.  Blue Mazda 6 Sports index CP ** FFO stolen from outside a house.

The police have multiple hits on their ANPR systems from around Maidenhead, but none for some time and presume the offender has now abandoned the car somewhere.  Can everyone keep their eyes peeled for this car.  It could be parked up anywhere, but usually offenders chose quiet residential locations, where such a car, parking it up and walking away, would not stand out, or attract attention.  If you see it, please let us know using the 101 number, quoting Niche Ref. No:  43210169752
As you will see below – another car was broken into Powney Road – so an opportunist was there checking out cars.  Can everyone who has a video doorbell / CCTV in that area, please check their footage.  If you have video anyone acting in a suspicious manner – please email it to me at my police email below.

NEXT: Further to my message about Rogue Traders driving around, I have received this from Peter:

Hi Jeff,

Your neighbourhood alert yesterday was very timely.

A rogue trader did a ‘drive through’ yesterday, in North Ascot at 4:50 pm of the gated development where we live.

We have colour CCTV covering our house, which has captured the van and if you require any information, I will do my best to supply or alternatively I am happy to show it to a member of your team.

Regards,
Peter

Many thanks Peter – everything like this is useful for us.  A colour picture of the van with its signage and index plate is really useful and we circulate it widely internally as these people do travel widely.  This intelligence is brilliant.

If you have a video doorbell / CCTV, please check it regularly, if you see a crime / suspicious incident, reported near you.  You may not have been a victim of crime, because your security was really good / you had locked your car and left nothing on display (including loose change / sunglasses), so an offender walked away.  We still need that footage.  Often crimes are reported between wide time periods – when someone went out and when the returned – that could be any time all day, or when they parked up at say 6 p.m. and when they next used their car, the next day.  Your intelligence of footage in a road could pinpoint:
The time an offence possibly took place.
A description of a possible offender.
If we can identify that possible offender from clothing / posture / walking style – pinpoint their whereabouts at an exact time.
A possible route taken between reported offences.
We often have two crimes reported to us, from very different locations, but no way of knowing if they are connected.  Your footage, of someone walking on your drive, looking at the house / trying car door handles can really help us with that.  We then know we are looking fo one offender – not two.

Fortunately – we only have ‘Opportunist Offenders’.  They always look for the easiest target, so it is not difficult to deter them.  A locked car, nothing left on display, a burglar alarm – even if nothing else – a dummy alarm box.  Also, they tend to wear the same favourite clothes and trainers when they go out to offend !!!  Video images often lead to easy identification.

KEEP LETTING US KNOW ABOUT SUSPICIOUS PEOPLE OUT AND ABOUT – PARTICULARLY IN THE EARLY HOURS – AND CARS / VANS WHO ARE DRIVING TOO SLOWLY ALONG YOUR ROAD, OR CONTAINING PEOPLE, YOU DON’T THINK LIVE THERE AND ARE UP TO NO GOOD.

Use your instincts – if you think something is odd / suspicious – it is.  You can ring us on the 101 number, or pass us the intelligence, using the online web reporting form, referenced below on the TVP website.

If we do a check and everything is in order – nothing is lost, if someone is about their lawful business, they won’t mind and you could be protecting your community – that is what we are all about.

MEMBERS’ COMMENTS:

From Angela

Hi Jeff,

It pains me to say that I fell for a scam yesterday and I would like you to warn others about this.

I was doing some research on retail websites, when suddenly my computer froze and everything disappeared, except for 'Microsoft' messages, both visual and audio, telling me that suspicious activity had been detected and I had been locked out.  To resolve the issue I should phone a number they gave me.

I didn't do this immediately, but using another device, tried to find Microsoft help.  I couldn't get any useful help so eventually called the number as I could not even access the tool, to switch off.

The scammer was very convincing and I ended up giving him access to my computer.

It was not until I was in the process if making a payment, which should have been £3.99, when got a text from my credit card company that I realised something was horribly wrong.

I told the 'technical support' person that I had replied to their text, saying that it was not me that the abandoned the activity and I got control of my computer.

I called the credit card company and they have cancelled two payments and blocked my account.  In hindsight, I should have just powered off and then sought help.

Please warn others.

Angela

Many thanks Angela for letting us all know – what not to do !
