FIRST AN ACTION FRAUD CASE – REFERRED BY A BANK AFTER USING THE BANKING PROTOCOL:
The victim attended her bank, to withdraw all her savings, after receiving a telephone call from an unknown person, telling her that her bank account had been compromised and her savings were at risk. She was to go to her bank and withdraw all her savings in cash. He would send a courier to collect it and put it in a secure and safe account.
She was to withdraw the cash and leave it in a box outside her house where he would send a courier to collect it and keep it safe for her.
She was told not to trust her bank, nor the police and to not to let anyone know what she was doing, or why.
She went to her bank and attempted to withdraw her savings. As this was an ‘unusual withdrawal’, the bank teller went through the ‘Banking Protocol’ with her. They believed she was the victim of a ‘Courier Fraud’ and refused her access to her account and called the police.
The police attended immediately and took her home, to make sure a courier was not waiting for her and to offer advice and reassurance.
The police checked her phone records, which showed she had received 15 phone calls on Thursday the 2nd September and 17 on Wednesday all from different fake numbers.
The victim is extremely vulnerable being sight and slightly hearing impaired and not particularly mobile.
Fortunately, an alert bank employee recognised the Courier Fraud signs.
We need to spread this message wider as we are still finding victims and potential victims. If you visit a day centre or lunch club, where there are likely to be target victims, let me know and I will come along and do a talk !

We have received reports from residents in Bakers lane, Maidenhead, Marlow Road & Vansittart Road, Bisham, Cannon Court Road & The Chase. Apparently they were persistent, but not aggressive.

Organised crime gangs, use these young people to locate elderly and vulnerable people, who are easily persuaded to part with their money. Everyone knows the goods they are selling, are substandard – that is the point ! If you buy from them, knowing that – you are a potential future target, for a scam. Most people buy something, to get rid of them – again - that means you are vulnerable. They collect these addresses and receive an additional payment, for each one. These addresses go on a list and are sold to scammers, as ‘A Succours List’. Currently we have lists with nearly 300 names on them - for RBWM alone. Honor Ryan from Trading Standards, has several copies of these lists and attempts to visit everyone on them, to let them know and advise them, how to deal with unsolicited phone calls, emails, callers at the door.
You do not want to be on these lists, as you will be targeted by the tarmaccers, tree surgeons, garden workers, double glazing reps, roof moss removers, driveway people, bogus builders – you name it !
