With Spring on the way we are planning the next phase in WildCookham's project to re-introduce Water Voles to our local waterways, bringing back a much-loved creature made famous in the Cookham-based book The Wind in the Willows. We are creating a volunteer team to monitor the presence of the voles we released last August and hopefully start planning for a further release this summer.
We need your help with this. There is no need for prior expertise or knowledge about water voles. The local wildlife trust (BBOWT) is providing the basic training we need so all that's needed is a love of nature and a small amount of time. We plan to form a team of around 12 people and to work in pairs in selected parts of Cookham's rivers and streams. The half day's training will be in April and the monitoring will start after that.
