NEXT:  AMELIA HAS SENT ME AN UPDATE OF HER BANKING SCAM, I RECENTLY REPORTED.  PLEASE READ IT CAREFULLY – IT WILL HELP YOU TO UNDERSTAND HOW MUCH EFFORT AND TIME THE SCAMMERS PUT IN TO CONVINCE YOU THEY ARE GENUINE – AND AS A CONSEQUENCE – WHY EVEN THOSE ON THEIR GUARD FALL FOR IT:

Hi Jeff,

OK......... this one definitely needs to come with a big red warning, buckle up for a lengthy ride.

I now realise, I was very nearly completely scammed by a scam text I received.  Allegedly, I had been in contact with someone who had Covid and they were offering me a free Covid Test pack – with a minimal charge of £1 for postage.

I was later phoned by a 'James Kennedy' apparently from the 'HSBC Fraud Department'.  This was also part of the same scam – it had many branches.

He told me about fraudulent transactions, using my debit card in Manchester.  Later I found out these were entirely made up, as was the £1 Covid text I had received.  He told me that I needed to change my internet login ASAP, which he would walk me through.

Thankfully, as I told him, I had already cancelled my debit card, but he then walked me through how to change my online banking login (starting with an IB number) and setting a new password, including getting a verification code sent by HSBC to my phone - yes, I know I shouldn’t have - but I did give that to him.

He even talked me through ringing an 'HSBC' line (0345 600 2290 which again, I now find out as I have now checked, is flagged as a suspicious number, to confirm I was resetting my password.  He even gave me a wonderful made up reference to put in - HRFBM-1961-6820-LSJY !!!.

I now wonder, if they recorded my voice quoting the after they mentioned 'my voice is my password' security message....

He finally told me to delete the text message that I would receive to say I had now successfully set up internet banking on my iPhone.  He also told me they would be speaking to Barclays, about some other alleged suspicious transactions on my account.

With a final, belated rush of clarity, I rang HSBC directly who confirmed the whole this was an attempted scam !  I  have now entirely removed my on line banking access and thanks to their highly robust security checks, they have reassured me there have been no fraudulent transactions on my current account or associated on-line savings accounts.

'James' is apparently ringing me back on Saturday, to give me an update on the case and his discussion with Barclays - that will be one helluva interesting call if he does!!!!!!!!

Amelia.

There is a lot of detail here, but it is all in the hope that if you get one of these calls, you will be caught off guard, but as it progresses, the above detail will kick in and you will realise what is happening.  It starts with a ’free’ Covid text and ends up as a major bank fraud !  I am grateful to Amelia for sharing with us.  It could save hundreds from falling for this scam, as they seem to come form a multitude of directions to confuse you.
