This is a message passed from Buckinghamshire & Surrey trading standards regarding the latest scam technique.

Scammers are using the cost of living crisis to target households. They are sending text messages and emails that appear to be from the energy regulator, Ofgem. The message invites you to apply for your £400 rebate and instructs you to follow a link to a fake Ofgem website to then provide personal details and set up a direct debit to receive the rebate. But it’s all a lie.

For most people the discount will be applied to your energy bill automatically – there's absolutely no need to apply.

But be aware that if you have an older prepayment meter you will get energy bill discount vouchers sent you in the first week of each month from October, via SMS text, email or post, that you will then need to redeem at your usual top-up point.

In all cases, no household should be asked for bank details at any point.

Remember:
- If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
- It's your right to hang up if you receive an unwanted call. Don't be pressured into making a quick decision.
- Don't click on unknown links or attachments.
- Never give your personal details, especially your bank details or pin number. Email tracking gif
