WARNING - ANOTHER COURIER FRAUD CASE - FORTUNATELY THE AGGRIEVED BECAME SUSPICIOUS AND DID NOT HAND OVER THE MONEY:
7/11 Windsor - The aggrieved received a phone call from a man purporting to be a police officer, from Scotland Yard. The man explained they were investigating a case of fraud at his bank. They asked the aggrieved to withdraw £6,500 from the bank, so that they could discover who was involved with the fraud. The aggrieved was told to get the cash in a paper envelope and not to touch the notes, as they would be fingerprinted. The notes were to be £20 and £50, as they were harder to trace.
The aggrieved was also told to keep his mobile phone on and with him, when he went to the bank, so that the ‘police officer’ could talk him through the process. The aggrieved went to the bank with his wife and son. When he returned home with the cash, the fraudster said he would give him a shoulder and reference number, to prove the call was genuine.
The aggrieved was then asked to put on a pair of gloves and separate out the notes, into 2 piles. He was then asked to read some of the serial numbers from each of the two piles and write them on the back of two envelopes, which he was then asked to seal. They had then to be placed in a plastic bag, ready for a courier to collect.
The aggrieved asked if he would be given a receipt for the money and was told, this was not police practice, but he was given a code word, which the courier would give him, to show him everything was above board. A courier arrived within 5 minutes, to collect the cash. The son became suspicious and phoned the police. The fraudster told him this was not necessary, as he was the police. Eventually the man on the phone became angry and swore at the aggrieved’s son and the courier made off.
The police confirmed it was a scam and attended immediately, in case the courier returned.
