The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) has now advised against all travel overseas unless it is essential, for the next 30 days at least.

If you have a trip booked during this period, even if the flight is still going ahead or the hotel is still open, then you will generally be able to make a claim with your travel insurer. This doesn’t apply to ALL insurers though, so be sure to check your policy details.

If your flight or hotel stay has been cancelled by the firm itself, then you should be entitled to a refund. Even if it hasn’t, it’s a good idea to check your cancellation rights ‒ you may at least be able to move your booking to another time without being financially penalised.

It’s also worth noting that a host of insurers have paused offering travel cover at all, such is the level of uncertainty at the moment.

So if you want to book a holiday, it may be worth holding off until you can actually buy travel cover. And when you do, make sure you really focus on the fine print to understand what you're covered for.
