There is a new Government Directive, obliging RBWM to make temporary but significant changes to our road layouts, to give more space to cyclists and pedestrians.

RBWM have employed consultants and are rapidly developing a plan, which could gain central Govt. funding.
Now is the chance for you to contribute your ideas, to how cycling and walking could be supported and extended in Cookham and into Maidenhead.

Many cities (London, New York, Milan) and towns (Reading, Oxford, Norwich, Leeds..) are creating pop-up segregated cycle ways, the segregation is essential to SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE SAFETY of cycling, particularly for the young and old.

A 3.5m lane can allow 2000 car drivers per hour, or 14,000 cyclists per hour!
At the same time, air pollution decreases and fitness increases, both important for surviving Covid19!
UK Traffic = leading cause of child death, ages 5 to 19 !!!

Possible proposal to CLOSE OFF school entrances from traffic, during school pickup/drop off times.
Residential roads can have filters such as planters or benches, houses are still accessible by car but rat-running by cars is stopped. Cycling becomes more pleasant, safer and quicker.

(I have learnt about this by attending a meeting held by Windsor and Maidenhead Cycling Action Group, notified by RBWM Climate Emergency Coalition, and East Berks Green Party plan a Zoom discussion so do join these organisations).

Please let’s discuss here, and then email and lobby your Local Councillors to express your views.
