FRAUDS AND SCAMS COME IN FOUR FORMATS:

At the door
Letter
Telephone
Email

At the Door:
Remember our NHW motto:
I do not buy goods and services at the door.  Most common will be bogus builders

Letter:
Usually the scam – someone has died with a similar name to you leaving millions – Bin them

Telephone:
When answering the phone – you only say ‘Hello’  Scammers use computers to generate the calls – 10 at a time.  The first one answered cancels the other nine for a later call – hence silent calls.  You are never personally targeted.  JUST PUT DOWN THE RECEIVER.

EMAIL:
There are hundreds of these scam emails, which hit our in-boxes every day.  All scams have certain things in common.
They do not address you personally by name, but are addressed ‘dear resident’ / ‘customer’ or whatever.
They contain an ‘Inducement’ – Someone with a name similar to you has died, leaving millions….., You are due a refund…...
They contain a ‘Threat’ – if you don’t do this by a certain date, usually within 24 hours, something terrible will happen.
There will be a ‘LINK’, you need to click on, to do whatever.
The current most common scams are:
HMRC – they have a warrant for your arrest, if you don’t immediately pay outstanding taxes !
You have driven through a charging area without making the payment of £25 !
TV Licensing / Paypal – Your Direct Debit has failed – click on the link to re-enter your bank and card details !

THE RULE IS:  YOU MUST NEVER CLICK ON A LINK – EVER - IN EMAILS YOU ARE NOT EXPECTING.
