The coronavirus infection rate has rocketed in Windsor and Maidenhead and is rapidly approaching 600.

The latest figures from Public Health England show the rates in the borough are now the third highest in Berkshire.


The statistics from the week ending Wednesday, December 27, show the figure has soared to 579.2 cases per 100,000 people.

This is is from 353.3 the previous week.

Rates are continuing to rise steeply in most Berkshire areas.

Slough remains the worst afflicted, with a rate of 760.3, which has again risen sharply from 545.7 the previous week.

Bracknell Forest's rate has also seen a big rise, from 458.6 to 610.4.

Other areas to see rises are Wokingham, from 371.1 to 446.5 and West Berkshire from 322.5 to 341.4.

There is slightly better news for bosses in Reading, which has seen a small fall from 463 to 454.3.

People in Slough have also been warned of a text message scam offering people the chance to apply for vaccinations - something they do not need to do.

The latest figures from Public Health England, released on New Year's Eve, show the latest confirmed cases in each area of Berkshire.

They are:

Bracknell Forest : 3,551 cases (increase of 149)
Reading : 5,076 cases (increase of 94)
Slough : 7,262 cases (increase of 263)
West Berkshire : 3,333 cases (increase of 94)
Windsor and Maidenhead: 4,520 cases (increase of 192)
Wokingham : 4,381 (increase of 130)

This is the latest data on the total number of deaths at NHS trusts in and around Berkshire:

Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust: 548 (increase of 13)
Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust: 301 (increase of four)
Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust: 24 (no change)
